UK Insurers Will Not Punish Drivers for Winter Tyres

In the very beginning of December, the Association of British Insurers said that UK insurance companies should not impose higher premiums on those motorists who fit winter tyres to their cars.

Later, an analysis of 90% of UK insurers revealed that almost none of them is willing to punish drivers for safety measures during the winter time provided that the typres meet manufacturer specifications.

Commenting on the winter time safety measures British drivers have to take, Nick Starling of the Association of British Insurers, said: "Insurers do not want to penalise motorists who take steps, like fitting winter tyres, to improve their safety on dangerous winter roads. Last year cold weather came early and there was some uncertainty for customers about the insurance implications of fitting winter tyres. This commitment clarifies the position for motorists."

He, however, highlighted that the commitment does not cover the fitting of winter tyres. This should come at the owners' expense.
