Compulsory Pet Insurance for Staffordshire Terriers not Supported in Commons

A member of parliament has defended the reputation of Staffordshire bull terriers during the debate about mandatory pet insurance in the House of Commons.

Last week the government gave up the idea of enforcing compulsory insurance for dog owners because it might penelise those pet lovers who already have cover. However, there was a separate debate about measures to be taken about dangerous canines.

Conservative MP for Lichfield, Michael Fabricant, said that not all terriers have the same temperament. His colleague Tony Baldry, Conservative MP for North Oxfordshire, believes that even microchipped pit bull terriers might be dangerous for people and other pets. He supports the idea of limiting breeding of aggressive dogs and hopes there will be more discussion with the Kennel Club and others.

Conservatives criticised the government for dropping the plans to introduce mandatory dog cover.

Currently pet insurance is not compulsory but many pet owners choose to get such benefits as medical cover and help with searching for a missing pet.

  1. My friend has a Staffordshire terrier and she is the friendliest dog you can find. The only danger is she will lick you to "death". I think a lot depends on how she was trained and "brought up". If the dog grew up in the loving home and never treated badly, she is unlikely to be agressive.
