Insurance Companies Offer Higher Premiums for Unemployed Drivers

According to the latest report by BBC, most British insurance companies offer higher premiums for unemployed customers.

The research performed by BBC experts revealed that the average difference in premiums reaches 30%.

The lowest premiums for unemployed drivers were offered by Aviva (23% higher than insurance premiums for employed Brits).

The highest premiums were offered by an unnamed company; they were 63% higher than those for employed customers.

Commenting on the findings of BBC, representatives of the insurance industry claimed that unemployed drivers fall into the group of "risky" customers. As such, Ian Crowder of AA said that "long-term unemployed make more motor insurance claims and may be more easily temped into insurance fraud than their employed peers."

Graeme Trudgill of the British Insurance Brokers’ Association said that "unemployed drivers are considered less likely to maintain their vehicles than those in work."
