Company pension

I used to work at the bank, and paid some money towards my pension plan. I can’t complain, as the employer was matching my contributions. But, after I left, I was told I can’t continue to pay towards that plan as I am no longer an employee. As it stands now I will not get much, so I feel it is a shame I can’t continue with it. Any suggestions?
